 What is foam-in-place packaging?

Do you have products that you need packaged? Foam in place is the optimal solution!

This page is intended as a primer for beginners. If you already know what you need, please go directly to our products page.

In the simplest sense, you have 2 chemicals, an 'A' side and a 'B' side. These chemicals are stored in various container sizes, ranging from small 5 gallon containers up to cylinders containing over 100 gallons each!

When you need to use foam, you turn on the heating box. This heats the steel hoses that feed foam to the mixing head in the foam gun.

Within 5 minutes, the metal hoses are heated, and your foam gun is ready for use. Simply aim your foam gun into the box or container, and pull the trigger. It's really that simple!

The red and blue hoses contain a special metal braiding that heat the chemicals flowing through them. The chemicals are 'mixed' in the front part of the gun. The dispensor has only 1 moving part, meaning practically nothing can break.

A liquid foam pours out, and starts to expand. Foam can frequently expand to about 100x its liquid volume size. As the foam expands, it makes a perfect fit around your product! Of course, you don't want the foam to actually touch your product, as foam likes to 'stick' to things. Your product should be wrapped in a special plastic film that comes with the machine.

Now, you might be thinking... I can use bubble wrap, or packing peanuts for my needs. True - for some products. For example, one of our customers uses foam-in-place to ship slot machines. These machines are much too heavy for bubble wrap or peanuts to effectively support. Not to mention the huge space advantage. It would take over a 40 foot tractor trailer load of bubble wrap to pack the same space as a 60 gallon cylinder of foam.

There are various foam types available, depending on the weight of the product you need packaged. Heavier products will need a heavier foam. (The downside to heavier foam is that it takes more liquid foam to fill a given volume of space.) There are formulas available to determine which foam you need - contact one of our representatives for more help on this topic.

The foam gun systems are so simple that there is almost no maintenance. Occasionally, an o-ring may need to be replaced, but we will show you how to do this yourself. Simple. Easy. Effective!
